What is an analogy?

less familiar by its resemblance to the more familiar.

Long Answer:

It is the similarity between two things usually for the purpose of explaining the less familiar by its resemblance to the more familiar. An analogy is a complex way of making comparison, a thinking process through similarities between things. The similarities can help in understanding the concept better. For example, Friendship can be compared to a tree that provides shade and stands by during hard times.

When you make an analogy, you are comparing two things, and you are saying that the similarities are important because they help us understand one of the two things. As you practice with these words you will improve your ability to make good analogies and avoid poor analogies (i.e., false analogies).
